Heptonstall
is a small village, and closest to the Arvon centre at Lumb
bank, and is a short walk away. There is a post office, and
two pubs there, in which the locals are friendly and the atmosphere
is great. On the evening the group went to the pub some local
musicians were present, and performed some of their songs,
which was great. One song was about buying a draft excluder,
which I loved!
Sylvia
Plath’s grave is located in the cemetery in Heptonstall.
I have still never actually visited it, although I would like
to- because there is so much writing and homework to be done
in the week there isn’t time. A group of students went
to Sylvia’s grave during the week, and found people
had left notes and letters on the grave. I wanted to find
time to walk there by myself, but it just never happened.
Hebden
Bridge is a larger shopping area further away from the centre,
it is a walkable distance (and a lovely walk through the trees),
but the footpath is slippery during the winter and you will
need sturdy shoes, and mustn’t mind a bit of mud. It
is about a 25 minute walk to Hebden Bridge, though the walk
back is uphill and very steep and may take you a little longer!
There are a number of pubs, local bakeries, gifty shops, and
vegi eateries in Hebden Bridge, a toy shop and a co-op. If
you can find time it would be worth spending an hour or so
in Hebden Bridge to visit the shops and have a look around.
There isn’t a supermarket in the area for about 11 miles,
which is just wonderful.
